GusGus, my therapy dog, and I visit Downingtown East Middle School every Thursday. Our time there with some wonderful students and teachers is marked by leash walking, grooming, petting and treating my dear and noble dog. The children are quickly learning the skills of how to correctly hold a leash, how to groom a dog with care, how to properly approach and pet a dog and how to feed a dog without their fingers being bitten off!  The experience for me is filled with affirmation, admiration and much joy as I witness these young boys and girls gain in their self-confidence and comfort level around a dog.

I think Gus likes going there, but there is no way to really tell. He wags his tail throughout the 45 minutes session, and he allows the students to hold and hug him without protest or a whimper. That is simply who he is. When we get into the car to head home, I give him a treat for a job well done, and then he collapses in the back seat. He is understandably tired, and needs some down time so the ride home is a quiet and relaxing one.  I admire him so much – for his patience, kindness and optimism, but most especially for believing that every human being is special and good and worth honoring. Of course I love him, but I also appreciate his generous and gentle spirit and his willingness and openness to bring happiness to all whom he meets. Thank you, Gus, with all my heart.
