My therapy dog, Gus, and I were with some wonderful children this morning from TALK Institute in Newtown Square whose head of school is the talented and passionate Melinda Kotler. We spent about an hour with the kids, ages 10-15 -what an hour it was! The TALK children petted, hugged and walked Gus during the sixty minutes, smiling, laughing, asking questions, and they also enjoyed the rabbit that was part of the morning program. One young man, whom I have worked with previously, walked Gus confidently and ably without my help, later sitting with Gus for some time, with the result that Gus did not want him to leave. It was an inspiring time of fellowship and community and, most importantly, laughter and affirmation. I loved all of it.

This morning defines Nellie’s Schoolhouse is. It is a program where our canine companions make those meaningful connections with children and where children feel that their doggy friends embrace them for who they are. When I witnessed Michael, whom I mentioned above, walk Gus independently, knowing how to hold and control the leash and calmly lead Gus in the direction he desired, I knew that this dog, my dog, had brought Michael so much. I had nothing to do with any of it. This relationship between this human and this dog had given Michael the gifts of joy and self confidence and yes, love. I ‘d like to think that Gus had received the same gifts.

It was a awesome hour filled with a great dog, a sweet bunny, terrific children and supportive and talented teachers. I was honored to be there.
